Agreed, a stunning movie. An omen of what may come if humanity continues on its path of selfishness.

What I took away was this: in a world where this is no hope, can one have hope? And the answer is, one can have hope in people, as the father has in his son.

I strongly disagree with your interpretation of the feminine spirit being the cause of the mother’s suicide. There is simply not enough information to make such an implication. I believe she represents those good people who lacked the conviction to take up the mantle as protectors of the young and innocent, in an utterly cruel world. Male or female has nothing to do with it. The boy’s guardian in the movie’s narrative could just as easily have been a woman.

I think that glimmer of hope was essential to the movie, Pelle. Otherwise, I’d been depressed for a week afterwards.

Yes, it’s a very strong movie, I watched it a few weeks ago. I was thinking that I should let you know about it, but apparently you found it anyhow!

I like the fact that there is a glimmer of hope at the end, and that there is some hope for the boy, thanks to the respective sacrifice of his parents.
