How it all began for me

I was twenty-three years old when I first realized my life was going to the dogs. I had no self-esteem and high levels of social anxiety. I thought I was ugly and spent many times in front of the mirror despising myself. I was virtually a virgin, not having completed my one chance of sex I had had so far in life, because I couldn't get it up with all that anxiety running through me.

Sometimes I wished I was someone's pet, not a worry in the world, no standards to live up to, no parents, friends or society to please. Instead, I felt like I was going insane. Disturbing images frequently flashed through my mind. Sometimes I questioned if there was any point to my existence.

God, it all sounds so crazy now. But today, I feel blessed that I went through this time in my life. Huge amounts of psychological and spiritual insight resulted from that, and I learned vividly that life can be turned around once you decide that enough is enough. It helped me build character. Yet, there came a time in my life, after lots of spiritual practice, retreats, psychotherapy etc, that I realized I was still fleeing from life. I remember it vividly. I was in Boudhgaya at the time. It was sort of chilly, and the air was thick with dust and fumes. A girl that I liked walked into the night, and I could not shout her name. A thundering flash of insight shook me that night, around New Year of 2006/2007, in that far-away land. I realized then that despite all my spiritual pursuits, I was still afraid of women.

Sure enough, a few months after I got back home, I had a lovely girlfriend who I am still with today. Towards the end of 2008, I started feeling compelled to share some of the insights that had been building in me over the many years of suffering, searching, and discovery. I became interested in studying the role of men in today's society, and the difficult predicament we find ourselves in. Why are so many men suffering, lost in the sea of life, like ships without a rudder? This troubled me, and I felt I wanted to do something about it. But what?

Finding meaning in Mrs Doubtfire and Erin Brockovich

It was towards the end of 2008. I was working on my Norwegian translation for The Way of The Superior Man by David Deida (still in progress) and applying it in the relationship with my lover, with great results. As the two of us spent some quiet quality time together watching films in her flat, the answer to the question that had plagued me for a long while - "how can I bring this material to the world in my own unique way?" came pulsing through the shimmering TV screen. In the middle of the unlikeliest of films - Erin Brockovich and Mrs. Doubtfire - it dawned on me, and Masculinity-Movies.com was born.

How you can turn things around

As with all of us, there are a number of reasons for why life didn't turn out exactly the way you wanted it to. Things happen in childhood, at school, with siblings and parents, with ex-lovers, and past careers. Beating yourself up over past mistakes doesn't do anyone any good. If my meditation practice taught me anything, that was it.

The question is though: Are you ready to move on? If so, you are in the right place!
